A sweet monster and a very logical bear
Supernatural's season 3 ended on the kind of cliffhanger that gets viewers yelling at their TV sets and counting the days to the new episodes. With season 4 starting on September 18th, we caught up via email with producer and writer Sera Gamble to try to eke out some hints about they mysteries of season 4.
Read on to hear about why the showrunners are as excited as the fans, Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles) going old school, Dean's state of mind, and horror-movie hair.
Firefox News: The writer's strike cut season 3 short. Meanwhile, time was running down on Dean's deal. Has having a full season ahead and Dean no longer in the process of dying affected the atmosphere working on season 4?
Sera Gamble: Yeah, I suppose we are in a different head space this season. Worrying about when we were going to shut down was no fun. And we came into this season with an embarrassment of riches, because we inherited some of the storyline we didn't get a chance to tell last year. So, we're in a happy place.
FFN: What's Sam been doing while Dean was in hell? Will he resemble how he was without Dean in "Mystery Spot" -- emotionally shut off and completely focused on hunting?
SG: Tune in and find out!
FFN: Can you tell us what Dean's state of mind will be like at the beginning of season 4?
SG: Confused – there's a lot of mystery surrounding his return. I can't say much about it yet. Just what I'm sure you were already assuming: when he starts to get answers, he doesn't like 'em all that much.
FFN: Will season 4 reveal how Dean got out of hell?
SG: Yes.
FFN: Is there a season 4 script you've written or are working on now that you're particularly excited about? Or a story that you're eager for viewers to see that you're allowed to talk about?
SG: I'm very excited for the premiere to air. Eric wrote it and Kim Manners directed it; I think they both outdid themselves. So did the actors. It's an all-around fantastic episode. One of my favorites. I wrote the second episode. It was a blast because I got to bring back some of my favorite characters. After the first two episodes air, we'll be freer to talk about what's really going on this season. I'll be happy about that. I hate being this cagey about everything.
Right this second, I'm in the thick of writing a two-parter with Eric; it'll air as episodes 9 and 10. We're both excited by it. The case that pulls Sam and Dean in is very evocative and unusual and cool. And it has a great cliffhanger. It's gonna feel like a long week in between those two episodes, if we do our jobs right.
FFN: Bobby has been a surrogate father to the boys.
Will we see more of him in season 4?
SG: Yes. You won't have to wait long to see him -- he's in the first couple of episodes. I just watched a cut of Episode Two, and there's a situation he finds himself in which may be his creepiest scene yet. And that's saying something.
FFN: Eric Kripke announced that season 4 would have a black and white episode, an homage to the classic horror films of the 30's. Are you a fan of a particular horror movie or director? Alfred Hitchcock?
SG: Yes – that would be Episode Three. How cool is that? I'm so glad we got to do this episode – and that Bob Singer directed it. That man is a walking encyclopedia of film, so he was definitely the guy for the job. Ben Edlund wrote it. He hit this fantastic tone that's an homage to the classics but also hilariously contemporary. They just went all-out. But my favorite thing about it is seeing Sam and Dean in black and white, like old-school matinée idols.
About your question – of course I'm a fan of Hitchcock. And I have to mention James Whale too; you can't beat the original Frankenstein. I love that poor sweet monster. And his bride had the best horror-movie hair ever.
FFN: You've been writing Sam and Dean for four seasons. What feels most different about writing them now than when you started in season one?
SG: I just know them better now. I've been here for every second of the last three years of their lives. It's a strange feeling, to know fictional characters better than you know many of the actual people in your life. But by Season Four of a show I think that starts to be true.
FFN: Has anything in particular surprised you about the characters, and also about the process of making the show?
SG: I've never worked on a show that kept getting renewed. Before this, I was on a show that got canceled in five episodes. So I always imagined that by Season Four, everything would start to feel stale and labored and hopelessly repetitive. But the creation of this season has been full of pleasant surprises. We've made some choices that felt risky, but the payoff was immediate, in the form of torrents and torrents of story ideas for each brother.
I'm not assuming, by the way, that everyone will love what we're doing. Far from it – I think it'll be the subject of much debate. We're looking forward to that. Actually, we're all squirming in our seats. I don't know who's looking forward to the premiere more – the fans or us.
FFN: One last question: Eric Kripke mentioned at Comic Con that there might be an episode with a seven foot tall, talking teddy bear in it. Would you care to comment?
SG: Last I checked, the teddy bear is still in the episode. The day the bear got invented was one of my favorite days ever on the show. All I can say is, within the construct of the episode, the bear is very logical.

First of all, thanks for the interview.
Well, now I'm officially nervous. Sera's interviews always have a way of dampening my excitement for the show. Mostly because, I get nervous at what they have planned for Dean and is it something good? Or another poor plot? I'll have to wait and see, but I can only hope that I will end up enjoying it and won't be one of the ones that won't like what's being done. I enjoy SN, I just want to keep enjoying it, not regret investing my time in it.

Sorry, but I can't stand that woman.
Everytime there's a new Gamble interview I want to cry becuase she always give bad news.
Het romance, het sex, and Dean is all she can talk about.
So, when asked about Sam's state of mind she answers with "tune in", but then when the question is about dean's state of mind she goes and describe it in details.
Meaning it's all about Dean again.

I can't stand that woman. Every time I get excited about the show, she gives an interview that completely saps my excitement.
They ARE going to screw this thing up with Dean, aren't they? They are going to totally screw up his character. I should have known not to trust them but, as usual, I let myself. "Hope springs eternal" as the little poet said. At least I can always count on a Sera Gamble interview to set me straight when I finally think the show will treat Dean as anything but a pathetic punching bag who pales in comparison to the Superness that is Smart Shining Sam, even his role in the mytharc.
And, whatever(the poster), the reason she said "tune in" is because Sam's state of mind is a huge issue so they aren't going to spoil that, naturally she'd say tune. They want you to see what his state of mind actually is as opposed to just saying "this is what he's thinking". Eveyone knows Dean is going to be back, it's not a spoiler talking about his storyline.
Honestly I don't understand why the Sam fans are upset, it's pretty clear to me Kripke and Gamble have finally wrangled it so they can truly shove Dean down.

I'm nervous too about what they had planed for Dean. But I like the spoilers for this season sooo much better then the ones for season 3.

:D I just realized I started my comment almost the same way as "whatever" did. I guess that just goes to show that Sam and Dean fans can sometimes agree on one thing. It sucks reading Sera Gamble interviews. :D

Sera Gamble all but wrote Sam out of episode 2 last season, so I don't know how anyone can say she hates on Dean. She treated Sam like crap in TKAA and esp. in Jus in Belo. I hated that epidose with a huge, huge hatred. Jus in Belo and TKAA were massive valentines of Dean-love, so the idea that she's dumping on Dean or putting him down in any way is totally ridiculous. Her scripts may not always be up to snuff, but that is a different issue. Her Dean love seems a lot stronger than her Sam love from my perspective. And Kripke's Dean Love is even worse than hers. No one pisses all over Sam and shoves him in a corner like Kripke. It makes me feel so bad for Jared that he gets that kind of material, honestly.
Kripke once said that Sam was supposed to be Luke Skywalker. If only he had the balls to really let Sam fly, instead of locking him up and showing off Dean as Super Action Hero and Saint Martyr all the time. WIAWSNB was a massive tribute to Dean's heroism and love of family. MS was a put-down of Sam's obsessiveness, even though I loved that episode for looking at Sam closely for once.
I've never seen a lead character treated as badly as Kripke treats Sam. Never. And if Sam finally gets some awesome material after waiting two whole seasons out on the Dean Show, then God bless Kripke for finally doing his own story idea.
Dean is getting a big place in the mytharc, and even that is not enough for some fans. What a sad world this is.
Jared talked about Sam at Comic Con, so Sam's state of mind can't be that much of a spoiler. Maybe the spoiler is that the PTB actually care about what Sam is thinking and feeling this season. That would be a shocker.

HUH have you people ever seen an interview with Sera Gamble really? She gushes over Jared all the time she is clearly a Jared girl. Also y'all must be living under rocks and have missed the thousands of Sam spoilers we've gotten from the PTB! Anyway I usually hate her episodes and this interview does nothing to make me more excited about the season. All she ever seems to want to write is throwing some girl at Sam or having someone tell Dean for the billionth time he's going to be alone. Umm last time I checked as long as Sam and Dean have each other they'll never be alone and I think that's good enough for them.

Sera does not hate Sam. I would rather hear vauge spoilers about Dean and hope it is something big for him then have it all spelled out and fear the possible character destruction awaiting him. While TKAA may have been Dean centric I would hardly call that awful pice of crap episode a Valentine to Dean it was a terrible episode and she coudl not have portrayed Dean worse if she tried. Dean deserved a Jus In Bello with the awful writing he suffered through in early S3 and I found Sam's role in TIOMS alot better then the awful LDC. Kripke has bent over backwards in his love for Sam by making all the mytharc and major arc about Sam his star so no I do not at all belive this notion some Sam fans cook up that Kripke hates Sam. I sure did not hear Gamble and Kripke go on about what a total assish loser Sam was on the season 2 dvd's or make Sam a 1 note comic relife side kick in early S3 or sacrifise Sam's character to prop Rublea and Sam in S3 that was all Dean for a character some claim is favored he is sure treated like crap. I can see why Jensen was so excited to finally get something of relevence outside Sam's brother and comic relife and then SG has to do one of her crappy interviews and spoil it for us.

Thank you Sera Gamble for taking time out of your busy schedule to answer these questions. I am very excited about season 4. I love the mystery behind Dean's return from Hell. Like others, I'm a little nervous about Dean's new storyline. I have my fingers crossed that Jensen Ackles gets the great story he's earned. I am very intrigued by the changes Sam goes through in the four months after Dean's death.
This is the most excited I have ever been for a season premiere. I hope it rocks!

As usual Sera's interviews sound like a smug but pathetic fangirl. I don't care for her writing either. What really gets me though, is how EVERY interview has the same old crap from the Sam and Dean camps: "everyone always dumps on my character and loves the other"! Geez people step back and take a look - if BOTH sides are always bitching, then chances are that both characters are either loved or hated equally by the writers. Can we just for once have the 2 camps NOT go it? Just once? That said, I'm hoping for a great season, although the teddy bear bit has me concerned.

Thank you so much for taking the time to do this interview, Ms. Gamble.
Personally I think that this is one of Sera's best interviews in a while. In most of her previous interview, I've always felt that she was talking down to the fans at one point or another, but this time I didn't feel that way at all. Really, I don't think I've ever been this excited about a season ever!!!

Fandom wanking on the writers. Lovely. As for me, my normal, unbiased self is just glad that the show is back on for another season, as I enjoy every aspect of it. If some episodes fall short of what I'd hoped, that's okay. Doesn't mean they are bad episodes, just means that everyone has a different opinion of what should have happened. Will it stop me from watching the show? No. Will it make me demean or belittle the writers? Again, no. They are doing their jobs, and it's unfair to label them in any way as unsupportive of certain cast members.
Welcome back, Supernatural!

I truely hope this is as good a season for Dean and his fans as for the Sam fans. I am thrilled Rubela is gone and hopefully more focas can come back to Dean and Sam and their indivual arc's and bond as brothers where it belongs. It sounds like they have some interesting stuff for both, I just wish Gamble would stop doing interviews is all because she kills my excitment for the season. That said she has written some great episodes and both brothers do usually come off good in her episodes so I do like her as an actual writer over Carver but I wish she would eaither give less grating interviews or none at all. All I was saying is Gamble is a known Jared/Sam girl so this stuff about her not caring about Sam and screwing his fans over is not true.

Sera Gamble interviews always bug me a bit, but so do Kripke's - mostly because they get my hopes up for awesome things, and instead we wind up getting lame things. Let's face it: season 3 was terrible, with or without the writer's strike. The fact that it's taken them 4 seasons to come up with useable storylines speaks volumes as to the capabilities of Kripke's writin staff. That being said, I do think that Sera truly values the brotherly relationship - unlike Ben Edlund, who needs to be removed from this show ASAP. That man is a menace to this show, and every other show he's ever been on (remember the last two seasons of Angel, anyone? Yeah, that was him).

I would really like to read an article from one of the SN writers, producers or directors which does not have a heap of negative, flaming comments attached to the bottom of it. What's with all this "they favour Dean or they favour Sam" crap? Cant we all just step back and appreciate that for the story to work with BOTH characters, we need individual story lines to develop them? Those that constantly complain are the ones that give a bad name to fandom across the world. Why can't we all be grateful for a great show, great cast and crew, and originality? Go Sera, Eric and crew, at least there are still some of us fans behind you.

for the record, i don't care if you're a sam fan, jealous of the attention dean got in the final few episodes of the last season. i don't care if you're a dean fan, either rebutting or making one of the same childish statements.. the main thing is, we are SUPERNATURAL fans! :) we are one of the most active fanbases today! so if you're interested in that teddy bear like me, tune in. if all you care about is brother vs. brother, well... OTH is on tv as well.
thanks for the interview!

I think she's just doing her job and that she likes the show and the characters. Sam and Dean play off of each other. There's give and take and as for what happens with Dean in Season 4, we'll have to wait and see. Regardless of whether Ms. Gamble likes one better than the other, I'm sure she's enough of a professional to work with the numerous people on the show who all have different fave actors and characters.
As someone who adores both Dean AND Sam (Yes, it's possible), I'm very eager to see how they've developed Sam without his brother and what they're going to do with Dean to show how he handles the fact that the world did go on without him. Facing one's own significance in the world (which for anyone isn't that big on a global scale) has to be a hardship.
I'm also VERY excited about the fun eps it sounds like they have planned this year.
Thank you for the interview. It was fun to read and gave me plenty to speculate about.

Good grief, did I read a different article? Better yet, have I been watching a different show for the past 3 seasons? I will never understand Supernatural fans and their doom and gloom mentality about EVERYTHING. I read all this negativity about how lame everything ends up being and how this is crap or that is crap and I have no freaking clue what show you're watching. Sera's interview was pretty boring. Nothing I haven't read before regarding S4. I'm completely excited for the premier and I know it won't disappoint. Let's face it, the boys never do.

Thanks for the interview. Sera does make me a little nervous in her interviews, but I'm still very excited about next season. And don't get me wrong because I don't agree with all of these "woe is Sam/Jared" comments here, but I also don't understand those who are talking about her being a Jared "girl". I've read her comments from interviews and such, and unless I'm missing something, she doesn't gush about him any more than she does about Jensen. She did comment about Jared in the DVD commentary for All Hell part 1, but Jensen was only in that episode for about 5 minutes. Even so, she seemed very impressed with Jensen's acting in that final scene. And she's written some very good episodes for Dean especially (Faith, Dead in the Water, Crossroad's Blues, Jus in Bello, Time is on My Side, to name some). So yeah, she's complimented Jared, but I certainly haven't seen any indication that she *prefers* him over Jensen. I don't think there's any need to pit one actor against the other here.

Come on people....it's clear the show needs both Sam and Dean, the show is clearly going to see Sam move on to a different level of power from Dean which will clearly disrupt the bond between the brothers (which is a freakin shame) but maybe Dean picked up a trick or two down under! Supernatural rocks - roll on season 4! Kripke and Gamble need to keep on rocking! I think we should also start a petition to bring back JD Morgan - the man is a legend! Please find some time to please your supernatural fans JDM!

First, THANK YOU to Sera for the interview. But I always take what she has to say with a grain of salt knowing her disdain for spoilers. I wouldn’t necessarily put the decision-making powers for Supernatural in her hands because I don’t always agree with her ideas and the directions she wants to go. (blood & gore are NOT a substitute for true characterizations and intricate storytelling) And I certainly would not have her & Edlund running the ship. But Sera’s talents have given us some of my favorite episodes, so as long as there are Kripke, Singer, and Manners there to balance out, then I will continue to have high hopes for Season 4 after a not-so-stellar S3 (for which the strike was not entirely at fault). My only concern is that I see S4 almost as a restart. The Team knows what the magic of S1 was, with the audience getting to know Sam & Dean as they got to know each other as brothers once again. By creating a rift between them, it’s almost like going back to the successful formula of S1. And if that means a return to the classic rock, the somber lighting, the family business road trip, and above all else “The Brothers”, with no unnecessary & mandated T&A incursions, then allow me to jump for joy!! But let’s not start ripping apart the stories before the season even starts.

well i think sera gamble rocks. thanks for the interview (not v.spoilery but she probs doesnt want to give too much away) and she is one of my favourite writers. i don't understand why you all hate her so much just because she doesnt ruin the new season by alking about it, or because you think she hates your fave character even though she obviously loves them both.
