I write fanfiction. Harry Potter fanfiction, to be more precise. Which means that, in the course of a typical story, I will go many many times to The Harry Potter Lexicon, the very best online Potter reference, to check dates, a spell, a spelling.

I am not alone in that, even she who wrote Harry Potter, J.K. Rowling herself, has admitted to checking a fact  or two at the Lexicon while on the road.

Steven Vander Ark, a school librarian, who created and maintains the site, and RDR Books had planned a book version of the site, a sort of Harry Potter encyclopedia.

Rowling and Warner Borthers brought suit against RDR Books last October, seeking a halt to the publication.

The case was heard in April and CNN says that the judge handed down the decision last night. The book lexicon has been permanently blocked.

RDR Books and Vander Ark had claimed "fair use". Judge Robert Patterson disagreed.

Rowling has stated, about this case, and on other occasions, that she has plans to write a Harry Potter Encyclopedia. I hope she does.

I also hope that Steven Vander Ark continues to maintain his site. Print or not, it is a compendium of  the Harry Potter  universe unequaled anywhere else on the Web.
